Trinidad sits between 10°N latitude and the Caribbean Sea. That means your engine runs hot. Ambient temps hover around 32-34°C most of the year, and if you're stuck in traffic on the Priority Bus Route or crawling through Port of Spain at 5 PM, your oil temperature can climb past 120°C.

Conventional motor oil starts breaking down around 110°C. The molecules shear, the viscosity drops, and your engine wears faster. You don't see it happening. You just notice it 40,000 km later when the mechanic tells you the bearings are gone.

Synthetic oil handles this differently. AMSOIL Signature Series, for example, holds its viscosity up to 150°C. The base stock is uniform at the molecular level, so there's nothing to shear apart. In a climate like Trinidad's, that difference matters.

What Most People in Trinidad Are Running

Walk into most auto parts shops here and you'll find the same handful of brands. Castrol, Mobil, Valvoline. Nothing wrong with them, but the conventional and semi-synthetic options most people buy aren't built for sustained tropical heat.

The most popular choice is usually whatever 10W-30 or 20W-50 is cheapest. And for an old Nissan B15 that's already at 200,000 km, fair enough. But if you're running a newer engine with tighter tolerances, a Toyota Hilux you depend on for work, or anything turbocharged, cheap oil is expensive maintenance.

Why AMSOIL Works Here

AMSOIL was the first company to develop synthetic motor oil that met API requirements. That was 1972. They've had 50 years to refine the formula.

The Signature Series 5W-30 provides 75% less engine wear than the API standard requires. That's not marketing language. It's from independent ASTM testing. The extended drain interval is 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. For most Trinidad drivers doing 15,000-20,000 km per year, that means one oil change instead of three or four.

One bottle of Signature Series costs more than a bottle of conventional oil. But you're buying fewer bottles per year, and the wear protection saves you money on engine repairs down the road.

What to Ask For

If you drive in Trinidad and want to switch to synthetic, here's what to consider:

Your owner's manual specifies a viscosity. Follow it. A 2019 Toyota Corolla calls for 0W-20. A Hilux diesel might want 5W-30 or 15W-40 depending on the model year. Don't guess.

Come into The Car Bar on Bournes Rd and Angelina St in Port of Spain. We'll look up your vehicle and match you with the right AMSOIL product. Or WhatsApp us your year, make, and model at +1 868-219-4645.

We stock the full AMSOIL line. Signature Series, XL, OE, and the heavy-duty diesel options. We'll tell you which one makes sense for your car and your budget.
