Salt air, UV exposure year-round, and rain that goes from zero to Biblical in 15 minutes. Trinidad's climate eats paint.
Most people here wash their car once a week (or they pay someone to wash it). That handles dirt. It doesn't handle UV damage, salt corrosion from coastal air, or the micro-scratches you get from bad wash technique.
If you want your paint to last, you need protection. Here's what we stock at The Car Bar and what we'd actually recommend.
Wax vs Sealant vs Ceramic
Quick breakdown. Wax is the traditional option. Carnauba wax gives a deep, warm shine. It wears off in 4-8 weeks in Trinidad's sun. You have to reapply regularly.
Sealants are synthetic and last longer. 3-6 months depending on conditions. Less "warm" looking than wax, but more practical if you don't want to wax every month.
Ceramic coatings are the most durable option. A proper ceramic coat lasts 1-2 years. But application is tricky. You need a clean, decontaminated surface, controlled environment, and patience. Most people should have a professional apply it.
What We Carry
We stock the full Mothers car care line. Here's what sells best:
Mothers California Gold Carnauba Wax. The classic. Goes on easy, buffs off clean, and gives a wet-look shine that holds up for about 6 weeks here. If you enjoy the process of waxing your car, this is the one.
Mothers CMX Ceramic Spray Coating. This is the practical choice for most people. Spray it on after a wash, wipe it off. Takes 10 minutes. Gives you a few months of hydrophobic protection. Not as durable as a proper ceramic coat, but you can reapply it whenever you want.
Mothers Back-to-Black. If you have faded black plastic trim (and in Trinidad, you do), this restores it. Temporary, but it works every time.
Wash Technique Matters More Than Products
The product you use matters less than how you use it. The biggest cause of swirl marks and scratches isn't cheap wax. It's dirty wash mitts and poor technique.
Two-bucket method. One bucket with soapy water, one with clean rinse water. Dip your mitt in soapy water, wash a panel, rinse the mitt in the clean bucket, repeat. This keeps the dirt off your paint instead of grinding it back in.
Dry with a proper microfiber towel. Not a chamois. Not an old t-shirt. A clean, thick microfiber towel. They're cheap. Buy a few.
