Fuel quality in Trinidad varies. NP and Unipet stations sell fuel that meets local standards, but local standards aren't the same as what AMSOIL or Bosch or Toyota had in mind when they designed your engine and fuel system.

Over time, deposits build up on fuel injectors, intake valves, and combustion chambers. The result is rough idle, reduced power, worse fuel economy, and higher emissions. You might not notice it happening because it's gradual. But put 50,000 km of Trinidad fuel through an engine with no fuel system maintenance and the deposits are real.

What Fuel Additives Do

A quality fuel additive contains detergents that dissolve carbon deposits and polyisobutylene amine (PIBA) or polyetheramine (PEA) compounds that clean injectors and keep them clean.

The keyword is "quality." Not all additives are the same. The cheap bottles at the gas station are mostly solvent with minimal active ingredient. They might clean the easy stuff but they won't touch baked-on carbon deposits.

AMSOIL Fuel Additives

AMSOIL P.i. Performance Improver is a concentrated injector cleaner. One bottle treats up to 75 litres of fuel. It uses PEA chemistry, which is the gold standard for fuel system cleaning. Independent testing showed it restored 100% of injector flow after a single treatment on heavily clogged injectors.

AMSOIL Upper Cylinder Lubricant adds lubrication to the fuel. This protects the fuel pump, injectors, and upper cylinder area. Especially useful if you drive a direct-injection engine where the fuel spray hits the piston crown directly.

For diesel: AMSOIL Diesel All-In-One adds cetane (for easier starts and cleaner combustion), detergent (for injector cleaning), and cold-flow improver (less relevant here, but the cetane boost and cleaning properties make it worth using).

How Often

For most Trinidad drivers, using an AMSOIL fuel additive every 5,000-6,000 km is a reasonable schedule. If you've never used one, the first treatment does the heavy lifting. Subsequent treatments are maintenance.

You won't feel a dramatic difference on a well-maintained engine. But on a car that's gone 40,000+ km without any fuel system treatment, the before and after is noticeable. Smoother idle, better throttle response, sometimes a measurable improvement in fuel economy.

Skip the Cheap Stuff

The $15 TT bottles at the gas station are mostly marketing. If you're going to use a fuel additive, use one with enough active ingredient to actually do something. AMSOIL P.i. costs more per bottle but treats more fuel and uses better chemistry.
